Friday Flashback: Chicago Landmarks Under Construction

The Northern Trust Bank Building was under construction when this photo was taken in 1906. It still stands at 50 South LaSalle Street, \<a href=\"http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?cdn:49:./temp/~ammem_vINv::\"\>via Chicago Daily News archives\<\/a\>.

Harper Memorial Library at the University of Chicago in 1911, \<a href=\"http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?cdn:2:./temp/~ammem_vINv::\"\>via Chicago Daily News archives\<\/a\>. The building was completed in 1912.

This photo was taken in 1911 when the Mandel Brothers Store occupied 1 N. State Street. A building was under construction just next door, via \<a href=\"http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?cdn:39:./temp/~ammem_vINv::\"\>Chicago Daily News Archives\<\/a\>.

The LaSalle Hotel at the northwest corner of LaSalle and Madison streets was under construction when this photo was taken in 1908, but when completed it was an extravagant hotel. Sadly, it burned down in 1946, killing 61 people. It was rebuilt in 1947, but the building was torn down in 1976 to make way for an office building. Then known as \"Municipal Pier,\" this is the inside of Navy Pier under construction in December 1915,\<a href=\"http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?cdn:43:./temp/~ammem_vINv::\"\>via Chicago Daily News archives\<\/a\>.
