Chicago's metal renaissance is well under way, yet one of it's arguable architects, Pelican, have been curiously absent since their last full-length, 2009's What We All Come To Need. 2012 will see the instrumental four-piece roar back to life with new material--namely, in the form of a new EP, titled Ataraxia/Taraxis. The four song set, recorded in four different recording studios, will see release on April 12 on Southern Lord.

To give us a foretaste of the instru-metal feast to come, Pelican released a sample track titled "Lathe Biosas," which, according to SPIN, is Greek for "live unnoticed." If Pelican were aiming to heed that advice, they certainly didn't do it here, as "Lathe" rips like a really solid Sabbath bridge, given additional melodic texture and even some funky syncopation.
