Protesters heckled Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker in his State of the State speech on Wednesday, calling him a liar and demanding his recall. The Chicago Tribune reports about 100 people gathered outside the Capitol building to rail against the governor. Five protesters made it inside and were removed.
In his 45-minute speech, Governor Walker championed his creation of “thousands of new jobs,” and an improved business climate. The Governor also trumpeted his ideas to eliminate wasteful and what he considers fraudulent spending. “Because I respect the hard working people of Wisconsin, I will continue to be a good steward of the taxpayer’s dollar. Eliminating waste, fraud and abuse is a top priority of my administration,” he said.
Walker’s opponents—including Senator Lena Taylor who was among the state Democrats who fled to Illinois last year—were not impressed. After Walker’s address, Taylor said “The governor did not lay out a new course for Wisconsin tonight.” According to Wisconsin’s Department of Workforce Development, the state has lost jobs for six months in a row.
State Democrats still have yet to decide an opponent for Walker in the upcoming recall election, for which a date has yet to be set. While more than 1 million people signed petitions to force a recall, local polls show Governor Walker is still maintaining at least a 6 percent lead over proposed opponents.
