WGN Radio Is Looking For The First Next Great Cubs Song

By Chuck Sudo in Arts & Entertainment on Feb 7, 2012 3:30PM

2011_6_1_Cubs_oops.jpg Spring training is set to open in a matter of weeks and both the Cubs and White Sox don't figure to aim for postseason contention this year. As a sign of lowered expectations at Clark and Addison, Cubs radio flagship station WGN has a contest where they're looking for "the next great song" about the Chicago National League Ballclub. A song WGN will most certainly play into the ground in a manner similar to how Steve Goodman's prolific songwriting career is now best known as "that guy who wrote 'Go Cubs Go.'"

If you think you have what it takes, all you need to do is submit your song by Feb. 29 to cubssong@wgnradio.com as an mp3 attachment. Songs longer than four minutes will be disqualified. The following must be mentioned in the song:

  • The Cubs (Duh!)

  • WGN Radio (Double Duh!)

Individual players, coaches and management may not be referenced. WGN staff will pick their favorites and place them online for a vote. The winning entry will have the chance to record it in a professional studio, perform the song live during Jonathon Brandmeier's April 5 broadcast on Opening Day, and become the official song of the Cubs 2012 season. WGN Radio will air it ad nauseum before every game and during spots and promos. A hint: keep it positive. Submitting a song called "Realistic Expectations (While I Score This Chick's Phone Number in the Bleachers)" or "Weak Up the Middle" won't make the cut.

Here are the official rules for the contest.
