Kurt Elling lost out on a Best Jazz Vocal Grammy last night in what was a crowded field of worthy nominations for that category. Last year's The Gate was a stellar collection of inspired covers, with two originals, that found producer Don Was (Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan) stripping the excesses of Elling's previous recordings to get to the emotional centers of the songs.
Elling plays Symphony Center tomorrow night with a program of love songs called Passion World. Joining Elling are special guests violinist Regina Carter and saxophonis/clarinetist Anat Cohen. Cohen, the sister of jazz trumpeter Avashai Cohen, is at home in a litany of musical styles from modern and traditional jazz, to classical music and Brazilian choro and Argentine tango music, while Carter is hands down one of the top five violinists in the world. this is an event not to be missed.
