A second student has died in connection with yesterday's shooting at a Cleveland-area high school. Russell King was declared brain dead today. He was one of five students shot by suspected gunman T.J. Lane.
Details are starting to emerge about Lane's home life. Geauga County court records indicate Lane's father has a history of violence against women, including Lane's mother. Thomas Lane, Jr. was previously accused of assaulting a police officer and was once convicted of trying to suffocate a former wife.
Lane's family released a statement through their lawyer that read:
"The family wanted me to convey to the citizens of Geauga County and Northeastern Ohio that the family is devastated by this most recent event. They want to give their most heartfelt and sincere condolences to the family of the young man who passed and their continuing prayers are with all those who were injured. This is something that could never have been predicted. TJ's family has asked for some privacy while they try to understand how such a tragedy could have occurred and while they mourn this terrible loss for their community."
Lane had one prior case in Geauga County Juvenile court two years ago, but it isn't known what the nature of the case is as of post time. Officials sad Lane and his family were well known to Geauga County social workers. Meanwhile, reaction to King's death spread among his fellow students and friends on Twitter. 17-year-old Dan Parmetor was killed in the shooting yesterday.
Officials have not given any indications as to a motive for the shootings, and are planning a mid-morning press conference to address the shooting and their investigation.
[UPDATE] 12:10 p.m. The Associated Press reports a third student has died from gunshot wounds sustained in yesterday's shooting. Demetrius Hewlin had been in critical condition. Meanwhile, suspect T.J. Lane is expected in juvenile court this afternoon.
[UPDATE] 3:25 p.m.: ABC News reports prosecutors as saying T.J. Lane chose his victims randomly. Lane appeared in court this afternoon, but media were prohibited from photographing him.
