Fisk Finale: Neighbors Celebrate Coal Plants' Impending Departures

A day after the historic announcement that Chicago’s notorious coal plants would be closing, community groups gathered to celebrate in Dvorak Park. In the shadow of the towering Fisk Generating Station smokestack, residents of Pilsen and Little Village met with press, clearly savoring an outcome to a decades-old fight with signs, banners and robust cheers.

The impending coal plant departures (Pilsen’s Fisk will close later this year and Little Village’s Crawford in 2014) leave many asking questions about what needs to happen on the plant sites and to prepare the City’s electrical grid while others are turning attention to different neighborhood blights. But for most assembled in the park, those questions can wait for a few days as the communities celebrate.
