The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Thursday that school districts that get their food through the government's school lunch program can nix beef that contains "pink slime" and get their meat without filler. Schools can choose 95 percent lean beef patties made with the "slime," or ground beef that's less lean but made without it.
This is, obviously, great news--we wrote last month that even McDonald's had recognized what a problem eating the ammonia-treated filler can be, even though the American Meat Institute called it "safe, wholesome and nutritious." We'll celebrate with a nice big burger tonight.
