Calumet 412, one of our favorite online time-wasters, posted this gem two days ago, an advertisement for Marina City back when it was fresh, new and ahead of its time. Longtime reader Seth Anderson added the caption "I think there's a lot of rum in these cokes." We admit to resisting the urge to break out our Capitol Records Ultra Lounge collection after first viewing this ad.

Architect Bertrand Goldberg intended the twin corncob towers to be a "city within a city" and the project was intended to combat the flight of white professionals to the suburbs. (Goldberg's original blueprints and lecture notes for Marina City are available online)

52 years after ground was broken on the project, Marina City has become one of the landmarks of downtown Chicago.
