Big Belly Trash Cans To Be Replaced During NATO Summits

2012_4_10_big_belly.jpg The city plans to pull hundreds of the BigBelly solar powered trash cans off the streets and replace them with wire trash cans in preparation for the May NATO summit, The Chicago Tribune reports. Chicago police are replacing the cans “within the expected footprint of the NATO event” in order to make it easier to check trash cans for something dangerous. About 40 have been replaced so far.

There are no hard numbers as to how many will be replaced, and no return date. Anne Sheahan, spokeswoman for the Department of Streets and Sanitation told the Trib “The BigBellys are being replaced as part of a routine public safety measure,” and they “will be returned when the city's public safety departments have deemed it appropriate to do so.” As the city already owns the wire cans, they will not need to requisition new ones.
