Parking around Wrigley Field is nigh impossible unless a motorist has a masochistic need to pay through the nose for either a lot space or, worse, a residential parking pass allowing street parking in the immediate neighborhood. And seeing some of the prices parking stickers have sold for, "masochistic" may be an understatement.
44th Ward Ald. Tom Tunney introduced a plan to the City Council Committee on Pedestrian and Public Safety Tuesday that aims to crack down on Wrigleyville residents who sell their parking permits. The current fine for residents who sell their parking permits is set at $500. Tunney's proposal seeks to establish a tiered fine system for repeat offenders. Second-time offenders would be fined increase the fines to $750, a $1,000 fine would be imposed for a third offense, and multiple offenders would be fined $1,500.
Tunney told the Tribune:
"I don't want to put people in jail over this thing, but I want people to understand I really am serious about limiting the abuse in this."
Wrigleyille homeowners who rent out their garages on game days would not be affected by the proposal.
