Michelle Obama admitted today that despite being married to the most powerful White Sox fan in the world, she is actually a Cubs fan. A 10-year-old boy asked her today if she was as big a fan of the White Sox as her husband, and he wanted to know if she had called to congratulate Philip Humber on his perfect game, the way her husband had.
Michelle responded, "Oh, gosh. OK, the ... no, I'm not as big a fan because I grew up a Cubs fan. We're a mixed marriage." It turns out that despite her South Side roots, she followed her father in becoming a Cubs fan. The Tribune writes:
"That's one thing that he and I did — when I would come home from school, the Cubs would be playing; they'd usually be just in the third inning by the time I got home from school at 3:30 p.m., and Jose Cardenal would be third man up to bat, and we'd sit and we'd watch the game.
"There's sort of a sentimental connection that I have with the Cubs because of my dad. So I'm kind of always a Cubs fan."
But she hedged.
"Although as a Chicagoan, I love all of our teams," she said. "We're on record there."
