The CTA's Yellow Line Oakton Street station opened before the crack of dawn this morning. It's been a long time coming for this station.

It's a historic occasion; this marks the first time in decades commuters could stop at Oakton. The station had been closed for years when CTA tore the station down in the 60s and the route became an express shuttle between Dempster and Howard. Skokie residents have lobbied hard for the Oakton station's return for more than a decade.

Construction on the station began in 2010. The project cost $20 million overall; outside grants paid for the majority of the project, with the Village of Skokie contributing a tax increment financing grant.
