Former Rage Against The Machine guitarist and current Nightwatchman Tom Morello is butting heads with Mayor Rahm Emanuel over the city's plan to pull a permit for a nurses' union protest during the NATO summit. Morello is listed as a speaker and performer, and the city said the additional turnout Morello attracts would exceed Daley Plaza's 1,000-person capacity.
"Chicago is my hometown and the mayor is making me feel mighty unwelcome," Morello told Rolling Stone. "I don't care what they say or do, I'm coming to rock out and speak my mind. We won't be silenced and we won't be stopped. If Rahm Emanuel is so afraid of my popularity in Chicago maybe I should run against him in the next election. See you in the streets."
In other words, "Fuck you I won't do what you tell me!"
NBC points out Morello is technically from Libertyville. If Morello is indeed serious, the next mayoral election is in 2015, so he has time to set up residency. Interestingly enough, Morello's background is similar to that other Illinois politician. "The son of an American mother and a Kenyan father who abandoned him as an infant, he graduated from Harvard University with a degree in social studies."
