Brookfield Zoo has a new addition: a bison calf was born there May 16. The still-unnamed calf is the first bison born at the suburban Chicago zoo since the early 1970s.
Calves are usually born in late spring, weigh between 40-70 pounds at birth, can stand within a half-hour and able to run within a few hours. They're able to graze at one week but continue to nurse for several months. The reddish color seen here will give way to a darker brown within four months.
The calf will join its mother, three-year-old Leotie, 12-year-old father Ron and other bison as part of Brookfield Zoo's Great Bear Wilderness Exhibit.
