A spike in gun violence is as sure a sign of summer in Chicago as sidewalk cafés, more bicyclists on the streets and the Cubs being out of contention. The Tribune reports today that one person was killed and two dozen people injured in gun violence across the city between Saturday afternoon and early Sunday morning.

The one fatality was identified as 19-year-old Jaleel Beasley, who was one of three people shot at the 2400 block of West Roosevelt Road. The driver of a party bus who witnessed that shooting told the Tribune he "saw four or five guys pumping him."

Among the injured in the shootings was a 6-year-old girl in Marquette Park who was shot playing in front of her house on the 6900 block of South Artesian Avenue about 4:15 p.m.

Put the guns away.
