On June 22-23, The Chicago Cinema Society and the newly revamped Logan Theater will host the near-midnight premiere of Beyond The Black Rainbow, a movie described as a "Reagan-era fever dream inspired by hazy childhood memories of midnight movies and Saturday morning cartoons." Buy tickets here.

Here's a bare-bones plot description:

Despite being under heavy sedation, Elena tries to make her way out of Arboria, a secluded, quasi-futuristic commune.

And, of course, the trailer:

If that didn't pique your interest, considering the sci-fi horror fan salivation brought on by Alison Willmore's opening line in her AV Club review of the film:

Like fragments of Stanley Kubrick, THX 1138, John Carpenter, Scanners, and a dozen other sci-fi and horror films melded by imperfect memory into an unstable whole, Beyond The Black Rainbow follows a dream logic that’s all the more persuasive for being impossible to follow entirely.

On one hand: fuck yes. On the other hand: Rainbow could be nothing more than pretentious, glorified fan-service with no original ideas of its own. Submitted for your consideration: the mixed scores on IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, and this, the highest ranked comment on the YouTube trailer page: "2001: A Clockwork Tron Enter the Sunshine Void."

Of course, there's only one way to find out if the directorial debut of Panos Cosmatos is worthwhile, and that is to go...to the Logan Theater on June 22 or June 23. What, was there a more evocative closing phrase you had in mind?
