Summer Sessions On The Square Kicks Off Tomorrow

2012_05_22_summersessions.jpg It’s that lovely time of year again when we gather around Logan Square’s most phallic structure to laze in the grass and enjoy some free tunes. Tomorrow, June 23, is the first installment of this year’s Summer Sessions on the Square, a monthly summer music series that features neighborhood acts at Logan Square’s Illinois Centennial Monument.

This is the fourth year of the series, which is presented by The Whistler in partnership with CHIRP. Saturday’s lineup is like a Whitman’s sampler of musical genres—headlining will be rapper Serengeti, supporting will be flamenco ensemble Las Guitarras de Espana, and opening will be pop-rockers The Sweats.

Between sets, there will be Capoeira Angola performances by Logan Square’s International Capoeira Angola Foundation. The whole event is family friendly, and they suggest packing a picnic to enjoy during the show (but leave the glass bottles at home). Afterward, you can head over to The Whistler for a not-so-family-friendly afterparty (21+).

Beyond tomorrow’s show, the series will continue with three more sessions, each on the fourth Saturday of the month, through September (that’s July 28, Aug 25, and Sept 22). The summer’s lineup is still in the works, so keep an eye on Summer Sessions’ Twitter or Facebook for updates. Also, check out this video for headliner Serengeti’s “Shazam”:

Summer Sessions kicks off Saturday, June 23 at Illinois Centennial Monument at Logan Square, 2595 N. Milwaukee, 5:30-8:30 p.m., $5 suggested donation
