It was a classic pitchers' duel Friday between Chris Sale and Zack Greinke, who blanked the Sox in nine innings of work, as the Brewers took the Sox in extra innings. Sale pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing only four hits in the loss at U.S. Cellular, but earned a no decision when the game went into extra innings. Addison Reed maintained Sale's effort to blank the Brewers in the ninth by not allowing a hit on the inning. Jesse Crain, however, gave up an RBI single to Rickie Weeks in the 10th, which was just enough for the Brewers' win. The Sox have now had seven games without a run scored this season.

Diamondbacks 6, Cubs 1

A last minute scratch on the mound left the Cubs confused Friday night in Arizona. Sveum and crew were all set to face left-hander Jeff Saunders, whose "inability to get loose" forced Arizona to scratch him. The Cubs didn't stand a chance against former starter Josh Collmenter. His unique delivery gives right-handers trouble—rightys are .212 against him this season, and the Cubs lineup was full of them. Jeff Samardzija started well in the first three innings to give them a fighting chance, but once he got in trouble, he couldn't get back out. He gave up five runs in his five innings pitched with seven hits and two walks. The Cubs made an effort to get on base and give the starter some much needed run support, but struggled to get themselves back to the plate and left 11 base-runners stranded.
