Mayor Rahm Emanuel and organizers for the May NATO summit promised that Chicago taxpayers would spend a dime toward the costs of the summit. On Friday the city filed its first reimbursement requests to federal authorities, the first of many expected to be filed in the coming weeks.

The city is seeking $13 million from the feds related to overtime fees by Chicago police during the summit. The Police Department racked up $14.6 million in overtime fees during the summit and the city also filed a reimbursement request for the balance—$1.97 million—to World Business Chicago, the business development group founded by the mayor and charged with planning and raising funds for the summit.

The largest part of the reimbursement request would come from a federal fund earmarked for "National Special Security Events" and is estimated at $7.5 million. Other reimbursement requests include $1.23 million in federal funds related to port security and over $261,000 in mass transit security funds.
