One For The Road: Larry Doby Makes MLB Debut At Comiskey

By Samantha Abernethy in Arts & Entertainment on Jul 5, 2012 10:30PM

On this date in 1947, Larry Doby walked onto the field at Comiskey Park to become the first African American player to play for the American League of the MLB. Doby joined the Cleveland Indians shortly after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in the National League. Therefore Doby was the second black player in the MLB, a title that didn't make him nearly as famous as Robinson.

Doby later joined the White Sox in 1956, 1957 and 1959. He joined Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball league, the third American and the second African American to join the league. Coincidentally Doby was also the second African American to manage a major league team when he became manager of the White Sox in 1979.
