Last Minute Plans: Supreme Cuts Record Release Show At The Empty Bottle

2012_07_11_SupremeCuts.jpg Last summer we dubbed Supreme Cuts “the future of R&B,” and for good reason—the local duo’s beats are smooth and sensual and lacking all those freak-nasty lyrics that plague much of today's R&B. Well, just yesterday the pair released their first full-length album, Whispers in the Dark, and they’re celebrating in style tonight at Empty Bottle.

The new album isn’t far removed from the band’s small selection of previous material, full of heavy-hearted rhythms coupled with shimmery and warm samples. Take “Sherm” for example: this track (named for a joint dipped in PCP) is one of the album’s catchiest, driven by a melodic loop and layered with lush sounds, electronic claps, feminine oohs, and intermittent bird calls. Check it out for yourself: you can stream the entire album through Spin. And there’s more to come—the duo has a new mixtape, Chrome Lips, in the works and intends to release it in August.

Tonight’s show at the Bottle is part of the Portals Traveling Showcase, which will also present the stunning minimalist beats of Mister Lies (download his latest EP free through Bandcamp). Local acts Soleman and Different Sleep will also play this show, and The-Drum will DJ.

Supreme Cuts plays tonight at the Empty Bottle, 1035 N Western, 9 p.m., $12, 21+
