July 1 came and went without cabbies striking for the fare increase they've been lobbying for for years, even as new regulations made it more expensive for you to puke in a cab.
Ald. Anthony Beale (9th) announced a July 31 hearing on a proposed taxi fare hike, as he promised when City Council approved the new regulations in January. Taxi drivers proposed a 22 percent fare hike in December. They haven't received a fare hike since 2005 and, according to TaxiFareFinder.com, Chicago ranks 27th in the nation in sample fares.
Mayor Emanuel's office hasn't weighed in on the subject of a fare hike but a press release last week from the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection noted the $3.25 "flag pull" was higher than those in New York City and Boston.
