2012_7_27_garza.png According to ESPN Chicago, Cubs manager Dale Sveum announced today that Matt Garza won't be available to pitch until after the trade deadline. An MRI revealed that Garza has fluid buildup in his triceps and will be out until at least late next week. Garza has been drawing interest from numerous playoff contenders in both the AL and NL because of his age and pedigree of success in both leagues. The Cubs have been shopping him in hopes of bring back a package of promising prospects to fill their depleted farm system.

Cubs fans have been looking forward to the trade deadline to see how president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer will rebuild the organization. But over the last week a trade for Ryan Dempster fell apart after the story was leaked and Dempster made it known that he prefers the Dodgers. Now trading Garza has been hampered by his latest injury.

However, trading an injured player isn't unheard of: just ask Kenny Williams and Jake Peavy. But the fact that Garza won't be able to pitch until late next week at the earliest will diminish his value to prospective teams.
