Last Minute Plans: The Cell Phones At The Empty Bottle

2012_08_06_thecellphones.jpg We came across The Cell Phones a few months ago when they performed at Township, and we’ve been pretty much hooked since. The local trio has a peculiar style, bringing together grindcore and powerpop elements for a wild mess of sound that incites furious dancing and pelvic thrusting.

Their music is marked by heavy acoustic bass and drums and its lack of guitar. Oh, and there’s the explosive vocals of frontwoman Lindsay Charles, who can go from a dulcet croon to murderous shriek with bipolar ease. Check out the band’s most recent release, an EP called Hospital Spaceship, over at their Bandcamp page.

Headlining tonight’s show at the Bottle is the James Brown tribute band, Get Up With the Get Downs, and the supporting act is Black Bear Combo. But arrive on time for this one, because The Cell Phones open, and they put on an awesome show—lots of gyrating and erotic stage banter accompany their fast and loud ear assault. Here’s a little slice of that heaven:

The Cell Phones play tonight at the Empty Bottle, 1035 N Western, 9:30 p.m., free, 21+
