Imprisoned Former Gov. George Ryan Qualifies For Work Release

Former Gov. George Ryan has qualified for a work release program allowing him to leave prison five months early to stay at a halfway house in the West Loop. Former Gov. Jim Thompson, Ryan's attorney, says Ryan will move to work release in early February. His sentence ends July 4, 2013.
It's not clear what the 78-year-old's job will be. Ryan lost yet another appeal on Monday. His attorneys argued that Ryan had accepted "favors from friends," not bribes, in federal court. That argument was clearly as successful as "I was holding it for a friend" and "The dog ate my homework." Ryan's attorneys say they'll appeal again, but the U.S. Supreme Court has already refused the case.
