Brooklyn-based quintet Starring are purveyors of vibrating and swirling noise-prog jams that, despite their fuzzed out guitars and experimental elements, are full of sharp instrumentation and stunning vocal melodies.

The band recently released its newest album, quirkily titled ABCDEFG-HIJKLMNOP-QRSTUV-WXYZ, through North Spy Records. Vocalist Clara Hunter describes it as “sparkle-prog,” and it’s hard to argue with that. Opening track “The Best,” starts off with frantic synth, shrieking flute-like sounds, and fast-as-fuck drums before falling into a steady rhythm with the familiar lyrics of Tina Turner, “Simply the best / better than all the rest.” Listen for yourself:

The whole of the album is available to stream over at SoundCloud for a limited time.

Starring is currently trekking the states with tourmates and fellow Brooklynites Guardian Alien, and both bands will be stopping by Chicago this Saturday to play the Hideout. If you’re unfamiliar with Guardian Alien, this psych-noise act is led by former Liturgy drummer Greg Fox, and they put on a trance-inducing performance. Opening Saturday’s show is E+. For now, here’s a video for “Aphonia” off Starring’s new album:

Starring performs at the Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia, Saturday, Aug. at 9 p.m., $10, 21+
