We're pretty skeptical of branded apps. Often, they have a tiny bit of content, no real functionality and a ton of advertising. That's why we were so surprised when we downloaded the Omaha Steaks Steak Time app. It is designed to help you keep track of your grilling and includes recipes, video instructions and more. It can even connect to a meat thermometer to tell you when steaks are ready to eat.

For the true tech geek (or the crazy steak aficionado), the app connects with the "iGrill" - a bluetooth-enabled meat thermometer that will keep track of the internal temperature of your steaks and roasts and transmit information to your iPhone. We're not quite that crazy, so we just used the timer function.

The app will ask what your desired level of doneness is and the thickness of the steak and give you an estimated time. If you're cooking for a crowd with a variety of preferences, name each steak and assign each one an alarm and you'll be able to pull them all off the grill at the right time. It also has functions for smoking and roasting, if you want to try something more complicated than a steak.

The "Steak 101" section has nutritional information, cooking charts, tips for good grilling and a whole series of great how-to videos, including how to get perfect grill marks, how to make compound butters and how to select the perfect grilling tools. There's only one video that really promotes the brand, and since it's clearly labeled, you can avoid if if you don't care. On the other hand, if you're an Omaha Steaks fanatic, you can shop directly through the app. Best of all, it's free.

Get grilling!
