New pop culture art gallery Gallery 27's current show, "This Will Increase Your X!" is a whimsical, unique tribute to the world of video games. The group show revolves around the concept of video game items that "power up" or create an advantage for the player.

The power-up originated with Pac-Man and was a big part of Super Mario Bros., in which it existed as the Super Mushroom. The development team likened the mushroom's effect of making Mario grow or shrink by eating the mushroom to Alice's Adventures In Wonderland. Power-ups give the player extra abilities in the video game world - things like access, defensive skills, health, ammunition, or the ability to escape enemies, among other things. It's a fun concept to create work around, and we love the variety of artists and styles present in this show.

One of the things that we think is great about Gallery 27 is that the work is both accessible and priced affordably for first-time collectors. If you're a video game enthusiast looking for something fresh for the walls at your place, don't miss this show.

Artists include Isaac Bidwell, Jason Hotchkiss, Charlie Bernatowicz, Doug LaRocca, and others. "This Will Increase Your X!" runs through August 31 at Gallery 27, located 1833 S. Halsted in Pilsen. The gallery is open Wednesday-Sunday from 1-6 p.m. The selection of giclee prints, screen prints, paintings, and more are also available to preview or purchase on Gallery 27's online store.
