Baby Beluga Whale Born At Shedd Aquarium

The Shedd Aquarium's beluga whale Mauyak gave birth early this morning to a bouncing 150-pound baby. The gender of the 4 1/2-foot calf hasn't been determined yet, the Shedd says it's doing swimmingly. This is the third calf for Mauyak, and the sixth successful beluga birth for the Shedd.

“In less than 24 hours after birth, the calf achieved the first critical milestones that we look for, including taking its first breath, bonding with mom and we’ve seen attempts at nursing,” said Ken Ramirez of the Shedd. “Shedd’s long history of research and care of these animals tells us that these initial behaviors indicate a strong calf; but we will continue to monitor for signs of development, including steady nursing and growth.”

Mauyak and calf will remain off exhibit for a few days while they get to know each other. This calf brings the Shedd beluga population up to seven.
