With hump day behind us, we can officially start the countdown to the weekend. If you’re like us, fair-weather weekends in Chicago only mean one thing: brunch.
Tavernita, opened in January of this year and quickly booked their large space full with reservations for dinner. If you haven’t had a chance to snag a spot for dinner, you can now try for a a space at brunch to sample their small plate style breakfast menu.
Their brunch menu is intended for sharing, and at $18.50 per person, the table can choose dishes from four categories of food items and enjoy one of Tavernita's signature brunch cocktails. The brunch menu is separated into four sections: en pan, a selection of sliders; tapas, small plate style dishes; eggs, a variety of egg-based concoctions; and sweets, including churros and chocolate, pancakes with graham cracker crumble and berries, and Tavernita style “chicken and waffles” made with crispy fried chicken, churros and maple syrup. With four dishes for the table, the options are plentiful for brunch plate sharing.
The favorite amongst diners and staff on the newly introduced brunch menu is the pork belly bocadillos, a mini bite layered with a thick slab of pork belly, fruit jam, pickled red onions and sandwiched between a brioche bun.
While the selection of brunch drinks may be small, each cocktail, whether kegged, shaken or stirred, packs a powerful punch of flavors and spice. The Maritacita blends tomato, red pepper, cucumber, lemon, paprika and sea salt with a choice of gin or vodka for a spicy and refreshing blend to contrast the savory dishes. Diners seeking something sweeter can try the s.o.s. cherry, which blends tequila, limoncello and sour cherry for a sweet drinks with a surprisingly sour finish.
Tavernita's brunch is only available on Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., so make your plans for this weekend soon.
Tavernita is located at 151 W. Erie.
