We're told college football kicks off tonight, and last week a reader, Will K, requested that we compile a modern day list of tailgating music to help update his playlist. While not everyone on the Chicagoist staff is a sports fan, we are all music fans so we decided to take the gauntlet thrown our way and run all over the musical gridiron with it.
The rules were fairly simple; we wanted songs most people wouldn't expect to hear in a pre-game parking lot and we wanted to try and focus on the side of musical discovery. Primarily, though, it had to be something that would pump you up before the game, and there's quite a wide range of what people consider pump up-able. Other considerations were that it be relatively new (even though a few of these tunes are 2+ decades old we tried to keep selections from 1980 onward) and songs that have actually appeared on a Jock Jam compilation were immediately disqualified. Imagine our surprise when we discovered that a selection from AC/DC was still viable!
Below is our humble playlist of suggested Jock Jams for a new(er) generation. Feel free to snag the playlist and listen to at your leisure, and of course we'd love to see your additional suggestions in the comments below. We'll add the best ones to the playlist and credit you on our tracklisting!
Let there be rock in the parking lot!
