The White Sox and Tigers faced off in a grudge match for the lead in the AL Central division, but Detroit managed to cut the lead to two games. Starter Jake Peavy gave up a couple of runs in the first off a Miguel Cabrera two-run homer. A.J. Pierzynski answered with a solo shot in the second, setting the White Sox theme of the evening—not close enough. Paul Konerko drove in Kevin Youkilis in the third and Dayan Viciedo tallied another run after Tigers starter Doug Fisher pegged Dewayne Wise with the bases loaded. The White Sox tied the game 4-4 off of a Konerko sacrifice fly in the sixth, but Peavy got nailed with three runs in the seventh, which gave the first game of the division lead battle to the Tigers.
