Get Ready For The Green City Market Locavore Challenge

2012_9_4_GCMLogo.png It's all well and good to talk about local, sustainable eating - but can you really put your money (and stomach) where your mouth is? Every year, Green City market hosts the locavore challenge, an opportunity to see what it takes to eat locally full-time. The challenge starts on September 8; are you ready?

Since we're not all equipped with our own urban farm, preservation kitchen and root cellar, September is the best time to try. Farmer's markets are filled to the brim (though slightly less filled than usual) and no one should go hungry. But it will require a little bit of planning, especially if you happen to have any parties planned between Sept. 8-15.

It's okay if you don't quite make it—the point is to spend a full week keeping your food miles in mind. Even the official "locavore pledge" has a "to the best of my ability" exception, and the local food police aren't going to come after you if you try a snickers bar. All in good fun.

Take the locavore pledge online. You can pick up your locavore kit at the market anytime. It includes recipes, a schedule of events, and helpful tips. Everyone who signs up will be entered to win a canning kit to help you preserve your market produce.
