Ziggy Played Guitar...

2012_09_bowie.jpg Canadian label Paper Bag Records is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and have decided to gift the world with a tribute album dedicated to David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars populated by their own artists. Luckily for everyone they have a decent roster. Like most tribute albums there are a few clunkers*—when will bands learn that simply slowing down a song does not equal a reinterpretation of any worth?—but unlike most it's unusually strong in its offerings. Standouts include an electro-distorto take by Born Ruffians on "Five Years" and a sludgy trudge through "Moonage Daydream" by PS I Love You.

Considering the Thin White Duke has been a virtual recluse in recent years it's nice to hear some new takes on his older material. Maybe this'll cross his transom and compel him to show the younger kids how it's done with some new music? Probably not, so at least enjoy this.

*Seriously, Bowie's own rendition of "John, I'm Only Dancing" is only barely listenable so why would anyone want to cover it?!
