Joe Bryl’s Sound & Vision Kicks Off This Weekend

The musical mastermind / director from the now-defunct Sonotheque has hopped on as musical director over at our favorite Bridgeport drinking place, Maria’s (he’d been curating events there for some time, but it only recently became official). And this Sunday, Bryl will kick off his Sound & Vision series, a monthly showcase that combines rare film and thematic music.

How it works: After a showing of a rare musical film, a local sound specialist will spin up a DJ set that correlates with the topic of the movie. This Sunday’s showing will feature Faust: Live At Klangbad Festival, a 70-minute documentary about an avant-garde German Krautrock band. Then the night continues on with a Krautrock DJ set by sound specialists/music historians Michael Latham and Wes Cleaver. You can expect to hear tracks by Neu!, Kraftwerk, and, of course the movie’s star, Faust.

The series, which runs the last Sunday of every month, is basically an ongoing lesson in music history, but with beer and fun. If Krautrock’s not your thing, there’s always next month, when Sound & Vision returns with a night of Dub.

Sound & Vision kicks off Sunday, September 30 at Maria’s Packaged Goods & Community Bar, 960 W 31st, 8 p.m., free
