Morning Box Score: White Sox Within One Of Division Lead

After dropping eight of their last nine games, the White Sox beat the Rays and pulled within one game of Detroit. Tampa Bay drew first blood off a Ben Zobrist homer to center field, but that was one of only two hits off of Gavin Floyd. Floyd pitched five innings, in which he walked five and threw 48 balls on 105 pitches. Kevin Youkilis tied the game up with an RBI single in the third to drive in Gordon Beckham. Alex Rios got the go-ahead run in the fourth inning by hitting his career-high 25th home run. In the sixth, Alexei Ramirez then drove in Rios to put the game just out of reach for the Rays. Detroit fell to the Twins last night, which makes the Sox still hopeful of making the playoffs.
St. Louis all but clinched the Wild Card Friday, which means both the Diamondbacks and the Cubs have been eliminated from post season play. But it seems that someone forgot to tell Starlin Castro—he went 3-for-4 with an RBI double in the sixth. Travis Wood could see the "L" form before his eyes as he gave up five hits and five runs (including two homers), in five innings of work to drop his second straight start. Dave Sappelt also had a home run for the Cubs to drive in David DeJesus in the fifth.
