Marathon Madness: Photos From The Race

Here at Chicagoist, there is not a lot of appetite for taking part in a sport that killed its first participant. And even less for one that requires band-aids on your nipples and petroleum jelly on your thighs to prevent bleeding. That said, we enjoy the spectacle and the big love that the running world has for Chicago’s course, which moves through a wide swath of the city’s neighborhoods.
Another year, another record. Ethiopian runner, Tsegaya Kebede crushed the course record set last year by almost a full minute. His countrywoman Atsede Baysa won the women’s race. Josh Cassidy won the men’s wheelchair race. U of I’s Tatyana McFadden won women’s wheelchair race.
Your friends probably were not as quick, but should be home recovering by now in a silver blanket-wrapped ball of quivering muscle. At midday, we popped over to De La Salle High School at 35th Street to shout at some runner friends. Sitting just past the 23rd mile marker, runners are working off fumes at that point in the race, but boisterous bystanders do their best to keep them positive. We could not help but note that today's perfect weather had the wave of marathoning humanity passing us by looking much stronger than in warmer years past. Kudos to everyone who ran today.
