Morning Box Score: Luck Of Irish Still Helping Notre Dame, Illini Continue To Struggle

(7) Notre Dame 20, (17) Stanford 13
It looked like Stanford was about to hand Notre Dame their first loss of the season, but the Irish pulled out the overtime win to improve to 6-0 for the first time since 2002. Notre Dame had a tough time getting the offense going. Everett Golson was 12-for-24 with 141 and a touchdown, but lost two fumbles. One turned into a Stanford touchdown and the other stopped a scoring drive for the Irish. Golson took a shot to the helmet and had to sit out with the Irish down 13-10. Tommy Rees replaced Golson and helped the Irish secure the overtime win by finding TJ Jones for the 7 yard TD pass just after the Irish stopped Stanford inches from the goal line, then the Irish defense stopped Stanford short of the goal line to secure the win.
The Illini continue to struggle—they were blanked by the Wolverines and lost their third Big Ten conference game. Michigan held Illinois to only 29 passing yards and 105 rushing yards on 37 carries. Nathan Scheelhaase came out of the game with a concussion in the first half and was replaced by Reilly O'Toole, who struggled with turnovers and threw an interception on the first drive of the second half that allowed Michigan to continue to run away with the game. Once the mental mistakes began, the game spun too far out of control for the Illini to right the ship.
The Wildcats continue to show that they're among the best of the Big Ten with a win over the Golden Gophers Saturday. Venric Mark was the talk of the game, as he had 182 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Both teams just ran over each other's defense with the run attack Saturday. Northwestern totaled 208 rushing yards on 34 attempts and Minnesota totaled 158 yards on 42 attempts. Kain Colter also ran for a 2 yard touchdown to help Northwestern advance to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten Legends division.
Northern Illinois 45, Buffalo 3
Jordan Lynch continues to carry the Huskies, as he rushed for two touchdowns and threw for two more in the win over Buffalo Saturday. Lynch finished the game 13 for 20 with 232 passing yards and 129 yards on the ground for 361 total yards. The Huskies advance to 6-1 on the season.
