Tommy Thompson Says Son Is Really Sorry About Birther Joke

Wisconsin politician Tommy Thompson says his son Jason "feels terrible" about the birther joke he made at a fundraiser on Sunday, but then Thompson said Jason didn't really make the joke — he just repeated it.

Jason Thompson told attendees Sunday, “We have the opportunity to send President Obama back to Chicago — or Kenya.” Video of his comments was posted to Buzzfeed. Staff for former governor and 2008 presidential candidate Tommy Thompson responded by saying, “The Governor has addressed this with his son, just like any father would do. Jason Thompson said something he should not have, and he apologizes.”

Jason Thompson himself has not released his own apology, but his father continues to express just how sorry Jason is.

The Washington Post writes:

“I talked to my son. He feels terrible about it,” Tommy Thompson said. “Nobody is suffering more than he is about this. He has apologized and that’s all I’m going to say about it.”

Obama’s father was Kenyan, but the president was born in Hawaii.

Asked if his son should apologize to the president, Thompson said no.

“He’s already apologized,” the older Thompson said. “It was an off-handed remark that somebody mentioned in the audience. You look at the movie. He didn’t say it. Somebody in the audience said it and he repeated it. I’ve talked to him about it and he’s apologized and that’s it.”
