Heirloom cooking is so yesterday, which is precisely why we love it. But some of us could use a refresher on the culinary values of yesteryear. Fortunately, the Scrumptious Pantry, best known for stocking distressed wood cupboards everywhere with foods like grandma used to make, is here to remind you how she made them.

Thanks to a new series of classes known as Heirloom 2.0, you can brush up on your vintage cooking skills while sampling some of the best dishes of days gone by. We recently popped into a class celebrating the finest in 1950s party dishes. Chef Kasey Passen of Culinary Gatherings demonstrated how to put a modern, healthier spin on classic party finger foods like deviled eggs, smoked salmon bites, and stuffed mushrooms. Suffice it to say we had more fun than a bobby soxer spinning her poodle skirt into a fuzzy pink cyclone at a sock hop. We also left feeling reasonably confident that we could replicate the dishes at home.

The next class in the series, canning for edible gifts, takes place Dec. 6, when owner Lee Greene will share some of her favorite heirloom recipes for the holidays while serving up some of the top secrets of the canning trade. You can still purchase seats here. Classes are $20 per person.

The Scrumptious Pantry is located at 3230 W. Fullerton Ave.
