Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart’s office has had some success sing the DNA of John Wayne Gacy’s John Doe victims to close out some cold cases. Now Dart is hoping for similar success using Gacy’s DNA.

The Associated Press reports Dart’s office is entering the DNA profiles of executed criminals, including Gacy, into a national database shared with other law enforcement agencies in an attempt to solve cold cases. The irony here is that Gacy and other criminals are listed in the database as homicides, since they were executed by the state.

Jason Moran, the sheriff’s detective leading the effort, believes it’s possible Gacy’s DNA could solve cold cases not only in Cook County, but in other states. Gacy was convicted of murdering 33 young men; eight of those victims were never identified. Gacy was also on the road a lot on business, so it’s conceivable there could be victims in the states where he traveled. Previous DNA testing identified one of Gacy’s John Doe victims in Cook County.
