Cross Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle off the list of politicians interested in the congressional seat vacated by Jesse Jackson Jr. Preckwinkle told NBC 5 speculation of her succeeding Jackson are “complete and total nonsense.”
With that out of the way attention now turns toward the candidate seeking the coveted Preckwinkle endorsement. NBC 5 cited a source in saying State Rep. Toi Hutchinson is the favorite for Preckwinkle’s blessing.
Preckwinkle was uncharacteristically cryptic but typically terse when asked who she would endorse.
"I have a number of friends in this race and at the moment I haven't decided whether or not I will endorse anyone, and if I endorse, who that will be," Preckwinkle said publicly.
Okay, then.
In other news related to Jackson’s vacated office, DNAInfo Chicago’s Mark Konkol writes about where former Rep. Mel Reynolds, who announced his candidacy for the seat, may not campaign. As a convicted sex offender, Reynolds can’t come within 500 feet of a “school, park, day care of playground” under state law, r else he could be charged with a Class 4 felony. He’s no longer required to register as a sex offender in Illinois, but if Reynolds somehow winds up being elected, he may have to register in Washington, DC. Konkol writes that all sex offenders who live, work or go to school in the District are required by law to have their criminal convictions reviewed by a general counsel, who then determines whether their name is added to a sex offender database.
