This week in theater: the other Charles Dickens play, new works from up-and-comers and much, much more.

The School for Lies

If you fell asleep during Classical Drama 101 (like us), now’s your chance to sit in on a zesty, quasi-modern day interpretation of Moliere’s 17th century play The Misanthrope — in witty iambic pentameter, no less. The show runs through Sunday, Jan. 20.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater, 800 E. Grand Ave., 312-595-5600 or online.

The Chimes

Skip A Christmas Carol and go see the other Christmas-themed play penned by Charles Dickens. The Chimes swaps the ghost of Christmas present with Goblins but still features holiday-appropriate messages of morality. The show runs Saturday, Dec. 15, Saturday, Dec. 22, Sunday, Dec. 23 and Monday, Dec. 31.

Greenhouse Theater Center, 2257 N. Lincoln Ave,773-404-7336 or online.

New Stages Industry Weekend

Free plays — need we say more? Goodman Theatre presents its New Stages series, consisting of two fully staged workshops, several readings and discussions with playwrights. Industry weekend runs Friday, Dec. 14 through Monday, Dec. 17.

Goodman Theatre, 170 N. Dearborn, more info online.
