The Cadillac Theater welcomes the touring production of the Tony-winning War Horse.

It’s a great week for Chicago theater, from orphans to opera.

Oliver

Since Annie is playing at the Paramount in Aurora, it’s only fitting that the other little orphan show, Oliver, is being produced on the other side of town. Take in the Charles Dickens classic novel-turned-musical in Evanston during its short run. The show runs Saturday, Dec. 22 through Monday, Dec. 31.

Cahn Auditorium, 600 Emerson St., Evanston, 847-920-5360 or online.

Hansel and Gretel

The Lyric Opera’s production of the famous fairytale is certainly not the sugarcoated iteration. Expect a darker version more akin to the Brothers Grimm original story — with a rich, hauntingly romantic score. The show runs through Saturday, Jan. 19.

Lyric Opera, 20 N. Wacker Dr., 312-332-2244 or online.

War Horse

The story of a World World II-era horse and his boy received accolades in London and New York — and lucky for us, the touring production has received similar reception in Chicago. The show runs through Saturday, Jan. 5.

Cadillac Palace Theatre, 151 W. Randolph, 800-775-2000 or online.
