Pastry chefs don't often get the spotlight (though we try as hard as we can) and it's even rarer for them to get their own special dinners. That's why our ears perked up when we heard about "Killing Me Sweetly," an all-star pastry event on Jan. 3 at Trenchermen.

Six pastry chefs will come together for the evening. They are all women, and this event is meant particularly to showcase the contribution of women to the food industry — a cause that is close to our hearts. Three of them are established; three are up-and -comers. Each pair of chefs will make a savory course and a sweet course, and then the Trenchermen will serve the amuse bouche, entree and a selection of mignardise to finish out the evening.

Chicago will be represented by Chef Dana Cree of Blackbird. Rosio Sanches of Noma in Copenhagen will be coming in from Europe and Christina Tosi of Momofuku Milk Bar in New York will give the evening some of that Momofuku magic. Continuing the theme of powerful women in food, mixologist Jenny Kessler (of Masa Azul and subject of our most recent "Behind the Stick" video) will be making cocktails and Sommelier Alpana Singh will handle the wine pairings.

With all this talent in one room, the tickets aren't cheap. The event costs $100 per person. But these women are never going to all be in one room again - if you're a pastry connoisseur, it's worth it.

Dinner starts at 6:30. Call 773-661-1540 for reservations and more information.

The Trenchermen is located at 2039 W. North Avenue.
