Three Killed, 12 Injured In New Year's Day Violence

Entering the second day of 2013, Chicago has already recorded three homicides. Fifteen people were shot in the first 24 hours of 2013. Eleven people were shot in the early hours of New Year's Day, including the first murder victim of the year.
Octavius Dontrell Lamb, 20, was shot and killed in the West Town neighborhood around 3 a.m. and was pronounced dead at 4:16 a.m. Police say Lamb had been working as a dishwasher downtown until 2 a.m. He stopped at a store for cigarettes before someone shot him in an alley about two blocks from his home.
In other early morning shootings, a 29-year-old man was shot in the mouth and shoulder around 1:15 a.m. as he left a bar fight in the Austin neighborhood. A 22-year-old man was shot in both legs and his scrotum around 2 a.m. during a fight at a house party in the Beverly neighborhood. A man believed to be in his 20s is in critical condition after being shot in the abdomen around 2:40 a.m. in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood. A 17-year-old boy was shot in the arm around 2:40 a.m. in the Humboldt Park neighborhood as he began arguing with a group of people. A 20-year-old man was shot in the arm around 2:45 a.m. in the West Englewood neighborhood. A 17-year-old girl and a 30-year-old man were shot in the Fuller Park neighborhood around 3:50 a.m. A 28-year-old man was shot in the head and chest and a 20-year-old woman was shot in the face and back after a shooting in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood. He is in "grave" condition, and she is in critical condition.
The second homicide of 2013 happened about 12 hours after the first, in the Bronzeville neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon. Kevin Jemison, 29, was shot in the head around 3 p.m., a few blocks from his home. About two hours later, Devonta Grisson, 19, was shot in the chest in a possible drive-by shooting in the Gage Park neighborhood.
Also on Tuesday afternoon, a 21-year-old man was shot four times while driving in the Back of the Yards neighborhood at 4:18 p.m. Then two teenage boys were shot in the chest and seriously wounded around 4:30 p.m. in the Humboldt Park neighborhood.
