Three Floyds brewpub is only a short drive from Chicago, while Flossmoor Station Restaurant and Brewery is located right next door to the Metra Electric Line’s station in Flossmoor.
They’re also easy to access via bicycle for dedicated cyclists/beer geeks looking to hoist a few 16-ounce curls to go along with a bike ride in a workout that completely ignores one’s core. Biking to either brewpub (or both) during winter has added hazards involved: Snow could make some trails harder to bike, forcing cyclists onto congested roads; the shorter day spans during winter makes biking after sunset a near-certainty for most.
Two members of the local online bike community The Chainlink, Kevin C. and Bob Hsiung, are spearheading a ride Jan. 12 that will go to Three Floyds, Flossmoor Station or both, for the truly dedicated. The routes (view the maps here) follow trails and smaller roads to each brewpub once the lakefront trail ends at the South Shore Cultural Center. Hsiung told Chicagoist the goal is for those cyclists wanting to visit Three Floyds being there in time for the brewpub to open at noon, before the lines to enter become too long.
The routes were also formed with the intention for cyclists who don’t wish to ride (or may not be in a condition to mount their saddles) back from the brewpubs to catch the inbound Metra electric lines to Chicago.
The rides begin at Daley Plaza at 9 a.m. and will follow the lakefront path, where they’ll meet up with other cyclists at Promontory Point at 9:45. A three-hour ride to Munster from Daley Plaza is a slightly slower pace than what we normally would keep if we were riding to Three Floyds. But it is winter and adverse weather conditions need to be considered. (For what it’s worth, Accuweather is predicting rain and/or ice in the morning.)
