Welcome back, non yuletide-themed Chicago theater.

The Motherf**ker with the Hat

It’s true, the coarse name alone might just fill up the seats in the Steppenwolf. But this play — which starred Chris Rock in the recent Broadway version — deals with far more complex issues, from drug addition to bitter jealousy. The show runs through Sunday, March 3.

Steppenwolf Theatre, 1650 N. Halsted, 312-335-1650 or online.

Skylight

David Hare’s quietly significant play revolves around two former lovers who attempt to rekindle their old flame — but they both find it’s more difficult than they realized. Skylight is one of several strong shows in the Court Theater’s lineup this season. The show runs through Sunday, Feb. 10.

Court Theatre, 5535 S. Ellis Ave., 773-753-4472 or online.

Pygmalion

Boho Theatre Company and Stage Left Theatre Company take the classic George Bernard Shaw play out for a refreshing spin, but the crux of the story is the same: Poor, thickly accented Eliza Doolittle is made into a “proper lady” by her arrogant benefactor Henry Higgins. The show runs through Sunday, Feb. 10.

Theater Wit, 1229 W. Belmont, 773-975-8150 or online.
