The contenders vying for Jesse Jackson Jr.’s congressional seat wasted no time filing their petitions to run for it Thursday. Seven candidates filed petitions to run for the seat: Chicago Ald. Anthony Beale (9th); Harvey pastor Clifford Eagleton; State Sen.-elect and former Northwestern football star Napoleon Harris; state Representative Toi Hutchinson, of Olympia Fields; Victor Jonathan (formerly Victor Onafuye); former state Rep. Robin Kelly and Jackson’s predecessor as IL-2 representative, Mel Reynolds of Dolton.

The Sun-Times writes Beale, Kelly, Hutchinson, Eagleton and Harris were all in line with their petitions in Springfield at 8 a.m., making them eligible for the highly coveted top spot on the ballot.

Primary elections for the district will be held Feb. 26, with the general election set for April 9.
